Mechanical Engineering is one of the major activities in the engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, study, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems. Continued research and development have led to better machines and processes helping the mankind. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest departments. The department is continuously striving to achieve excellence in education, academic and industry oriented research as well as consultancy work with service to the society.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Narsimha Reddy Engineering College (NRCM) is as old as the Institute itself. We aim to provide our students with a perfect blend of intellectual and practical experiences that helps them to serve our society and address a variety of needs. Today, the department of mechanical engineering of Narsimha Reddy Engineering College (NRCM) attracts and features an extraordinary rich diversity and quantity of talented individuals, with nearly 24 post graduates, 480 graduate students and over 15 faculty members. The impressive array of students makes the department as the largest in this College. The department is strengthened by knowledgeable and well experienced teaching and non-teaching staff having rich and varied institutional and industrial expertise.

Academic course work and projects are designed to endow students with the ability to apply knowledge of science, mathematics, and engineering, and the capability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, providing leadership and technical expertise. The department aptly makes use of the technical facility of the workshop in teaching and in setting up of in-house experimental set-ups. Apart from carrying out practical classes as per academic curriculum, workshop caters to needs of different departments of the Institute in terms of executing works of their B.Tech and M.Tech students as well as other related research/consultancy works. With a solid grounding in the principles and practice of mechanical engineering, our undergraduates are ready to engage in ethical approaches to engineering, with concern for society and the environment. Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of engineering, physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems.

DEPARTMENT LABS

1. Engineering Workshop
To familiarize with the basic manufacturing processes and to study the various tools and equipment used, hands-on training is given in different sections. Essentially student should know the labour involved, machinery or equipment necessary, time required to fabricate and also should be able to estimate the cost of the product or job work.

2. Metallurgy and Mechanics of Solids Lab
This lab well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics structure of materials and mechanical properties. The objective of the metallurgy and mechanics of solids lab is to demonstrate the basic principles in the area of grain structure, strength and mechanics of materials to the undergraduate students through a series of experiments. In this lab the experiments are performed to understand the specimen preparation, study of grain structure, effect of temperature on hardness. Properties of the materials such as impact strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, ductility can be determined. Major Equipments in metallurgy and mechanics of solids lab are Microscope, Heat treatment furnace, Polishing machine, Mounting press, Universal testing machine, Torsion testing machine, Impact testing machine, Brinell hardness testing machine, Rockwell hardness testing machine, Spring test and compression test.

3. Production Technology Lab
Production Technology Lab provides the tools that enable production of goods. It consists of machinery that makes creating a tangible physical product possible for a business. To the small business, this means a workshop at the very least, with more elaborate operations making use of machines and assembly lines. Choosing a production scale model within a company's capital means is important; simpler workshops tend to lead to lower production volume but cost less to assemble, while higher output operations require more complex and costly machines, which are sometimes cost prohibitive.

4. Mechanics of Fluids and Hydraulic Machinery Lab
This lab is very much essential in addition to Civil Engineers to carry out experiments for fluid properties and power. The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the fundamentals of turbine, pumps and ram. Major Equipment in Fluid Machines Lab are:- Francis turbine test rig, Pelton turbine test rig, Centrifugal pump test rig, Gear oil pump test rig, Hydraulic ram.

5. Machine Tools and Metrology Lab
Machine tools and metrology lab gives exposure on various basic production machines and instruments used for quality measurement particularly length, angle and surface measurement. The lab has been facilitated with lathe machine, milling machine, drilling machine, surface grinder, cylindrical grinding setup, slotting machine, tool and cutter grinder, sine bar, bevel protractor, pitch measurement gauge etc.

6. Thermal Engineering Lab
This lab is for mechanical students with facilities to carry out experiments on thermal properties of fuels and performance on thermal engines such as petrol and diesel engines. The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basic construction of two stroke and four stroke diesel and petrol engine. The lab also contain basic parts of an engine like carburetor, Fuel injection system, engine cooling system. Major Equipment in Internal Combustion Engine Lab are:- Two stroke and four stroke diesel and petrol engine, Carburetor, Different fuel injection system

7. Heat Transfer Lab
The role of experimentation in the teaching of subjects such as Heat Transfer is well established. Properly designed experiments reinforce the teaching of basic principles taught in lecture classes and help students to understand these principles more thoroughly. There are other advantages too: students learn to use basic instruments and get acquainted with the method used to measure various physical quantities; they also study techniques of analyzing experimental data and presenting them in a proper form. The Heat transfer lab have been provided with various experimental setups such as the thermal conductivity of a metallic rod, pin fin apparatus, natural convection apparatus, forced convection apparatus, emissivity of the gray body (plate) at different temperatures, heat exchange under parallel and counter flow conditions, Stefen-Boltzmann constant for thermal radiation etc.

8. Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Lab
This lab is for mechanical engineering students to carry out experiments independently. The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics of CNC machine and manufacturing technology. Major Equipment in Manufacturing Technology Lab are CNC trainer, computer systems of advanced configuration loaded with auto cad ANSYS, solid works and various open source software.

9. Production Engineering Practice and Instrumentation Lab
The Production Engineering Practice and Instrumentation Lab is provided for the mechanical engineering students in gaining an insight of measuring instruments based on electrical and electronic signals. The lab have been provided with various calibration instruments like LVDT, rotameter, pressure gauge, speed sensors, strain gauges, etc.
